Backstory: Born in the year -85, Herlath was the youngest son of the Darkmourn family, a proud but coy family with a strong lineage of spies and assassins.
His family was almost the least important and noble for the Thalassian society, considered "low" not because of their roguish behavior, but because of their peculiar skills and way of doing, being summoned almost as a last resort. Nonetheless the Darkmourn had followed their monarch almost blindly since the beginning, with unwavering loyalty.
As tradition dictated, each day Herlath would be trained in the art of stealth, assassination and the use of daggers and poison, from his birth to his passing of age.
His relatives, slightly copious in number, scorned Herlath because of his interests: along his basic training the elf was interested in the ways of disguise and shapeshifting, taking up studies on arcane magic, something considered ridiculous and "old" by his arrogant family.
With the invasion of the Scourge the Darkmourn family was summoned to defend Quel'thalas. Herlath, not an adult yet, was sent away on a boat with the other younglings and then reconciled with Lor'themar Theron and his prince.
Once he became a proud adult and member of the Sin'dorei, as called by his beloved prince, he joined Kael'thas' cause, believing his skills would be of use with the fighting in Lordaeron.
Following his prince and managing to keep himself alive through all their endeavors, Herlath struggled in the events in Outland under the leadership of Illidan Stormrage.
When the Exodar crashed Herlath was sent by his prince, among other Sunhawks, to Bloodmyst Isle as an agent.
After being almost slain by adventurers Herlath managed to teleport himself, albeit struggling, to his old home in Quel'thalas. There, after discovering the terrible truth of his family's demise, he spent years recovering from all that happened.
During his recovery he occasionally travelled on his family's last ship to gather information and supplies and as he heard about Kael'thas' madness and his demise in Sunwell Plateau, and his people's new Horde allies he started to question his and his family's blind loyalty and regretting everything he did while part of the Sunhawks.
He built up a new identity, opposite of his own, becoming Herlath the Merchant, a Sin'dorei seller of peculiar items. Alone, he pondered for years on his life and dove in those scorned shape-shifting and disguise skills he had hidden away for years by reading tomes on arcane magic, purchasing lessons from magisters who didn't recognize his face, and practice. His "life disguise" enabled him to get funds for remodeling his family's old ship, crucial to his mission.
He reappeared in society as the head of the Darkmourn family during the Darkspear rebellion, called to duty by his people, when he helped retake Bladefist Bay, but then disappeared again once Garrosh Hellscream was defeated.
Once finished, his family's ship, the Shadestrider, was transformed into a submarine in which he embarked on a great journey. He used his reputation as a merchant and his resources to search for the artifacts described by the books he inherited from his father, the former head. These heirlooms were hidden away by each head of the Darkmourn family, dating back to the first of their name, a Highborn under the service of Queen Azshara named Malanior.
The last entry of his diary alludes about a grave sin he committed after the Sundering and how dragons were a part of it. Along with the diary there was an approximate map of an island in the seas with the initials "M.A." which has become the new destination for the last of the Darkmourn.
